Oregon is home to 23 distinct winegrowing regions, known as American Viticulture Areas, or AVAs. The primary regions are the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, the Columbia Gorge and Eastern Oregon. This class highlights primary varietals (types of grapes) grown in these regions, and styles of winemaking as they are influenced by local micro-climates. A future class will examine nuances between specific sub-AVAs of the Willamette Valley, with an emphasis on Pinot Noir, and is set to draw on content covered in this first class.

Description

This class covers specific appellations (AVAs) of Oregon. To prepare, you will want to source the eight wines from the four different primary winegrowing regions of Oregon. Vintage is not as important as the appellation:

  • A Willamette Valley AVA Chardonnay
  • A Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
  • A Southern Oregon (Umpqua Valley, Applegate Valley, or Rogue Valley AVA) Grenache Rosé
  • A Southern Oregon (Umpqua Valley, Applegate Valley, or Rogue Valley AVA) Grenache Rosé Tempranillo
  • A Riesling from the western Columbia Gorge AVA
  • A fuller-bodied red blend (such as a GSM or Bordeaux-style) from the eastern Columbia Gorge AVA
  • A Grenache Blanc from Walla Walla Valley AVA
  • A Syrah from the Rocks District AVA

This class provides a broad overview of Oregon’s winegrowing regions. Class 3 offers a deep dive of Willamette Valley AVAs and their influence on Pinot Noirs produced there. It is available for purchase and download through this online store.
