16. Wines of Portugal

Portugal is a land rich in history, but masked in obscurity. Relatively isolated from the rest of Europe’s winegrowing regions, the country is home to hundreds of unique, indigenous varietals, but Portugal is most known for its development of fortified wines (Port) stemming from its involvement with the English Empire.

In this class, we look at Portugal’s ancient past, influences guiding its evolution, and where its wine industry is going today. We will sample nine different white, red, and fortified wines exemplifying Portugal’s different kinds of wines, with a focus on stylistic nuance.

This class covers a variety of white, red, and port wines from Portugal. To prepare, you will want to source the following nine (9) kinds of wines, available in the Pacific Northwest wine market, of the varietals, blends or styles, as well as regions noted below:

  • Vinho Verde from Vinho Verde DOC
  • White wine blend from Branco Dão DOC
  • White wine from Douro DOC
  • Red wine blend from Douro DOC
  • Medium-full bodied red blend from Biera Interior DOC
  • Touriga Franca/Touriga Nacional blend from Douro DOC
  • 10 Year Madeira
  • 10 Year Tawny Porto
  • Ruby Porto
